~Runes~

Runes are a method of divination. Divination is the practice of trying to see something which you cannot already see, like the future. Runes can indicate your past, present and future, and help with situations and problems by showing you the past and present situations and what consequences could occur in the future.

HISTORY

Runes were a writing system in Germany and Northern Europe (mainly Britain, Scandinavia and Iceland). The local shaman or runemaster was thought to have great insight and few wise individuals would use runes. The angular shapes are because they were meant to be carved into wood, sometimes into weapons to bless them. Runic inscriptions have been found from 3AD, and the word comes from 'runa' meaning secret or whisper.

MAKING RUNES

Runes are usually made from wood or stone.   Follow the guides below:

WOOD

The main types of wood used are ash, yew and birch, or the following:
Rowan - protection
Willow - connected to the moon
Oak - strength
Apple - love
Hazel - tradition for divining

Cut a branch from a living tree, ask it's permission and leave a small offering such as a shell, stone, crystal, sea salt, thread etc at the trunk. Cut slices with a saw (you may need someone older and stronger for this as it's really hard work!)

Cut 24 runes (maybe 2 extra incase you go wrong in the carving) about 1cm thick. Now with a soldering iron or poker carve your runes, or you can use paint or a marker to paint them on. Rub some beeswax in to protect them and now they can be cleansed.

STONE

Get your stones from a river bed or beach, where they will be smooth and already cleansed. The Nordic and Celtic people said that every stone had it's own special spirit. Leave some sea salt, corn or colored ribbon as an offering. Use a marker or paint to paint your runic symbols on, you may want to cleanse them, but if you've got them from the salty sea or a fast flowing river bed then you won't need to.

CLEANSING

There are many ways to cleanse your runes. This is important because they will have 'vibes' from the place they came from that will interfere with your divination.

FULL MOON

Simply place them under the light of a full moon for one night, you can leave them on a windowsill indoors if you like or leave them outside.

SMUDGING

You can waft smoking herbs over your runes, like with a smudge stick with sage or simply with incense.

WATER

This is the easiest and most effective. You put your runes in a material bag (an orange net works really well!) and dip it in a running river or stream for a few minutes. Don't use tap water, it has lots of chemicals and things in it. You could also leave your runes out in the rain, but this could damage wood ones and wash away paint or marker.

CARE

You should store your runes in a bag made from fabric. Usually people say it should be natural unbleached fabric, but you can use a colored cotton bag. They are very easy and simple to make, or you could keep them wrapped in cloth where they will be safe and you can use it as your 'casting cloth'. Before using them for the first time pass them through a candle flame (very quickly, don't burn yourself!) to empower them and make them special to you.

There are many different runic alphabets, these are the letter correspondences. This is very rough, some runes can stand for several letters, and there are separate runes for Th and Ng. There are over 4000 runic sets, from Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Anglo-Saxon Britain, France, Iceland and the former Soviet Union. The most widely used is the Early Germanic or Elder Futhark.

READING THE RUNES

There are many different ways to read the runes, the simplest are the three rune spread and using one rune. Here are how you cast your runes:

ONE RUNE

Focus on your question while holding your rune bag, then say 'I wish the runes to comment on .......(e.g.. how my day will go)', pick out a single rune from the bag, then look up it's meaning.

THREE RUNE SPREAD

Focus on the question and draw three runes as before. Lay the first rune in front of you on the right, the second in the middle and the last on your left.

Right rune = the current situation,

Middle rune = the action you must take,

Left rune = the likely outcome. This method is good for problem solving.

Trees

Time-honored, beautiful, solemn and wise. Noble, sacred and ancient
Trees reach the highest heavens and penetrate the deepest secrets of the earth.Trees are the largest living beings on this planet.
Trees are in communion with the spiritual and the material.
Trees guard the forests and the sanctified places that must not be spoiled. Trees watch over us and provide us with what we need to live on this planet. Trees provide a focal point for meditation, enlightenment, guidance and inspiration. Trees have a soul and a spirit

SPECIAL TREES

Each tree is a healer, but there are a few special trees that appeal to the human condition because of the special properties they bare. The trees below are especially symbolic and have been throughout history.

1. The Apple Tree- the custodian of wisdom and sign of the soul. Freya, the goddess of wisdom walks through heaven dispensing golden apples to the gods which will give them the gift of wisdom and understanding. To grow an apple tree in the garden is a happy omen. The druids believe that apple trees grow in the Celtic paradise. The day of the apple tree is Friday (Freya`s day) and it`s star is Venus. King Arthur was taken to the Vale of Avalon, the Apple Vale to heal his wounds. The apple tree man dwells in the middle of the apple trees. He is the guardian of their fertility and the fairy protector of the spirit of the goddess.

2. The Oak Tree- The tree of truth. It is ancient and wise and has an old spirit. An important tree for the druids. The mistletoe of the oak tree has many magickal properties. It is also a marriage tree. Symbolic of the marriage between the god and the goddess. If you dance around the oak tree and wear some of its leaves you will have a long and happy marriage. It is said that if there is a question in your heart that you cannot find the answer to then go to an oak tree and embrace it and ask the spirit of the oak tree to answer your question. If you should know then the oakman will send you a prophetic dream.

3. The Rowan Tree- The tree of vision, healing, psychic powers, also known as, Wicken-tree,Wild Ash, Witchbane, Witchen, Witch wood and Tree of Life. Sticks, twigs and branches of the rowan tree help in aid and protection. Rowan is associated with witchcraft. Runes were carved with sticks from a rowan tree. It is associated with the colors, red and gray. It is also a tree held dear by Druids and the Celtic Goddess Brigid. Rowan is also used during rites of the 2nd moon - the vision moon for rites of knowledge and divination. This is based on the Celtic calendar of the 13 moons and represents the Moon of astral travel and vision, healing and empowerment. Rowan bark will dye fabric grey. It can flavor liqueurs/cordials, and can be used to make ale. Rowan was special tree for me at one time.

Witch tree, rowan tree, pretty mountain ash,
Protect me right well from storm, flood and flash;
Now do I beg of thee some wee twigs and leaves,
And pri`thee turn from me all harm and grief.

4. The Bay Tree- the tree of healing. It is associated with masculine principles (and therefore a tree of the Lord), and medicine, music, and the rays of the sun. The bay protects dwellings and gardens. Bay leaves crowned poet, heroes and important men. Grow a bay tree near your house for it protects your dwelling and wards off illness. When a baby is born it is lucky to celebrate by planting a bay tree for the baby`s sake. Never plant a bay tree where vines grow.

5. The Hazel Tree- The tree of wishes and tree of the star goddess. It is associated with the Celtic goddess of the stars, Arianrhad, whose image was seen in the stars of the constellation we now know as the constellation of the Corona Borealis. The hazel is called the tree of wishes because it has the power to grant the hearts desire.

TREE SPIRITS

Tree Fauns- male tree spirits. Are said to be kindly, wise and reserved. Open to sensitive women and may court their souls.

2. The Ash Tree- it is said to be an ancestor of humankind. In Greece powerful families were believed to have come from ash trees. Norse Gods populated their sublunary world with a newborn race by breathing a human soul and spirit into an ash tree. In Norse myth, the most sacred ash is Yggdrasil, which is believed to be the entire support structure of the universe. Today in certain places people will leave tokens of human hair hanging from an ash tree in the hopes their wishes, hopes and desires will be granted.

3.The Lilac Tree- it is the fragrance of the lilac tree that is considered magickal. The fragrance is believed to carry humans into fairyland and the supernal world. English tradition considers the lilac to be an unlucky flower to be brought into the house because it is associated with death. This was perhaps fear of the power of the fragrance of the lilac. It is really quite a beneficiary tree. It`s flowers can be eaten and used as a tonic for the nervous system.

4. The Pine Tree- the tree of the sun. Its old title was "the sweetest of woods".The scent of Pine is useful in the reduction of guilt. The pine was also sacred to the sea-god Neptune (Poseidon) and to Bacchus (Dionysus).

5.The Broom Tree- as you can imagine, the properties associated with the broom tree is that of astral travel and flight.

6. The Silver Birch Tree- associated with Lammas tide on August 1,the light of the stars, the moon and the sun. It is a symbol of summer ever returning. It is said the birch is the mother of the oak tree because in prehistoric times it was the birch that prepared the earth floor for the majestic oak to be born. It is said the fairies love this tree in the springtime.

7. The Alder Tree- associated with water. The catkin bearing alder resist decay in its watery habitat. The water spirits, the undines love this tree as well as the unicorn. The leaves of an alder tree can be made into a tea to treat kidney problems.

8. The Holly Tree- symbol of the life force, vitality and immortality. It is considered a lucky tree to grow in the garden because it wards off negative energies. The shiny green leaves represent the vitality of life even in the coldest of times and is used in Yule for this reason. It is lucky to burn dried holly branches but not if their still green. The male holly tree the prickly one) and the female holly tree(the smooth variegated one) are inhabited by respectfully the holly man and the holly woman.

9. The Juniper Tree- considered a protective tree and unlucky to cut down a juniper tree. The tree has an abundance of healing properties. Infusions can be made to treat kidney and liver troubles, arthritis, dropsy and help the elderly.

10. The Hawthorn (Whitehorn or May Tree)Tree- this is the most sacred tree to the fairies probably because it is so wild, uncompromising and fragrant. If you sit under the thorn tree on may day eve, samhain eve and midsummer eve you can commune with the fairies. Make a ball of last years foliage tied with a white ribbon and burn it in a bonfire on new years day to rid yourself of troubles. Start fresh in the new year then by making yourself a ball of fresh thorn branches and leaves and keep it to be used in the next years bonfire. It is said that when Joseph of Arimathea came to Glastonbury (one of my fav place on earth!, I used to wish to be married in Glastonbury at one time and they have the best pre-Raphaelite shop and the best candle shop in town) he brought a white hawthorn with him and planted it in Wearyall Hill.

11. The Elder Tree- People used to think it was unlucky to bring any part of an elder tree into the house because it would bring a death in the family. It actually has a feminine soul. It is magickal, healing and fragrant. If planting an elder tree in the garden remember it likes to be protected and hidden. In fact all the fairy trees like to be planted at a distant from others.
